On January 31, 2025, a landslide occurred at 9th Street Beach, also known as Thousand Steps Beach, in Laguna Beach, California, prompting city officials to close the area until further notice. The incident was reported at approximately 7:15 a.m. when a portion of the cliff collapsed onto the beach, partially damaging the iconic steps leading down to the shore.

Officials have stated that there is no threat to neighboring properties or public safety. Geologists are currently evaluating the landslide and the stability of the cliff to determine the cause and assess any potential risks.

The exact cause of the landslide remains under investigation. Although Southern California had rain earlier in the week, it is unclear whether this contributed to the incident. No injuries were reported.
The beach will remain closed until officials deem it safe for the public to access. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated on the beach’s condition through official city media.
