President Trump’s second term has brought significant changes to the location of federal agencies in Washington D.C. The administration has issued a directive for agencies to propose plans for relocating their offices outside of the National Capital Region by April 14, 2025. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce government spending and increase efficiency by moving operations to less costly parts of the country.

The Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management have instructed agencies to focus on eliminating non-essential functions and consolidating areas that are duplicative. This directive aligns with President Trump’s “workforce optimization” executive order issued on February 11, 2025.

While this plan aims to cut costs and improve efficiency, it has raised concerns about the potential impact on the local economy in Washington D.C. and the feasibility of relocating a large number of federal offices. Some agencies, such as those related to law enforcement, national security, and public safety, are exempt from this directive.

The administration’s vision is to create a more streamlined and cost-effective federal government by decentralizing operations and reducing the concentration of federal agencies in Washington D.C..
